December 3rd, 1800 - The Battle of Hohenlinden

Outcome: French victory


On this day in 1800, a French army commanded by General Jean Moreau and composed of some 55,000 soldiers faced off against roughly 57,000 Austrian and Bavarian troops commanded by the Archduke John of Austria. The French managed to envelope portions of the Austrian army and inflicted severe casualties. The Austrians and Bavarians lost as many as 14,000 men. The French suffered only about 2,500 casualties.

Points of Interest:

  • The Archduke John, brother to the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II, was eighteen years old when he was placed in this command.

  • Francis II would sign an armistice with the French just weeks later on Christmas Day.
