December 10th, 1941- The Battle of Guam

Location: Guam

Outcome: Japanese victory


As Imperial Japan launched its expansive invasion of the Pacific, 5,400 soldiers were landed on Guam. Only 600 American and Chamorro troops were present on the island to oppose the invaders. After a three hour battle and 60 casualties, the American commander, Captain George McMillin surrendered. One Japanese soldier was killed in the engagement.

Points of Interest:

  • American forces would not return to Guam until July 21st of 1944.

  • Two days after the invasion of Guam, Germany and Italy declared war on the Untied States.
