September 25th, 1066 – The Battle of Stamford Bridge

In an extended and bloody battle, King Harold II of England defeated the Norwegian invaders. Harald Hardraade, the leader of the Norwegians, and his English ally Tostig were both killed in the melee. While 300 Norwegian ships had sailed across the channel, only 24 sailed home after this battle.
