October 11th, 1863 - The Battle of Collierville

Conflict: American Civil War

Combatants: Confederates vs. Federals

Location: Tennessee (USA)

Outcome: Federal victory

In this small battle, Confederate forces engaged the forces of William T. Sherman around a fort near Collierville, Tennessee. Ultimately unable to penetrate the fort and fearing reinforcements, the Confederates withdrew, but not before taking Sherman's horse from the General's train car.

Points of Interest:

  • It was not until 1880 that Sherman gave his now famous "war is hell" speech.

  • Sherman retired from the military in 1884 and, no lover of politics or politicians, declined the Republican nomination to run for President that same year.
