Intent on taking Nashville, Confederate General John Bell Hood marched 39,000 veteran soldiers into Tennessee in November of 1864. Federal Major General John M. Schofield, with 34,000 troops, was tasked with delaying the Confederate invasion. After escaping the Confederates at Columbia, Schofield and his Federals fought their way out of an envelopment during a night engagement at Spring Hill on November 29th.
Points of Interest:
After the war, Schofield served as the superintendent of West Point and succeeded Phillip Sheridan as Commanding General of the Army in 1888.
John Bell Hood went into business after the war but died in poverty in 1879.
