Conflict: Eighty Years' War
Combatants: Dutch vs. Germans and Spanish
Location: Netherlands
Outcome: Dutch victory
Outlawed by the ruling Spanish throne, William, the Prince of Orange, fled to Germany in 1567. He raised an army which he dispatched back to the Netherlands under his brother, Louis of Nassau. On May 23rd of 1568, Louis and 3,000 soldiers defeated a combined force of Germans and Spanish led by John, the Duke of Arenberg.
Points of Interest:
Two months after the Battle of Heiligerlee, the Dutch would be badly defeated at Jemmingen suppressing the rebellion in the north for many years.
The Netherlands would declare independence in 1568, but not be recognized until 1648.
