June 7th, 1863 - The Battle of Milliken's Bend

Outcome: Federal victory

One this day in 1863, Confederate troops under command of General Henry McCulloch initially pushed Federal troops back across the Mississippi River and inflicted over 600 casualties. The arrival of two Union gunboats, however, forced the Confederates to withdraw with about 185 casualties.

Points of Interest:

  • After the Confederate withdrawal, Union troops crossed back into Mississippi and burned down Jefferson Davis' plantation of Brierfield.

  • Milliken's Bend was one of the first Civil War engagements in which Black soldiers took part.
