June 5th, 1864 - The Battle of Piedmont

Conflict: American Civil War

Combatants: Confederates vs. Federals

Location: Virginia (USA)

Outcome: Federal victory

Union General David Hunter (shown below) circled around Confederate defenses at Harrisonburg, but was engaged by 5,000 troops under the command of General William "Grumble" Jones. The Federal soldiers broke the Confederate defensive lines, killed nearly 600 men, and took an additional 1,000 captive. The Federals lost about 780 casualties in the engagement.

Points of Interest:

  • Hunter was designated a 'felon' by the Confederacy because he organized the 1st South Carolina Regiment which was composed of former slaves.

  • After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Hunter presided over the military commission that tried the conspirators.
