June 21st, 1863 - The Battle of Upperville

Outcome: Inconclusive

In an attempt to locate the whereabouts of the main Confederate force, Federal cavalry clashed with that of General J. E. B. Stuart in a series of short but intense battles. Although, Stuart was eventually forced to withdraw, his cavalry succeeded in preventing the Federals from pinpointing Robert E. Lee's army.

  • This encounter was but one skirmish in the campaign leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg.

  • As Lee's Confederates continued to advance north, Philadelphians began shutting down their stores and businesses the day following Upperville.
