In an attempt to locate the whereabouts of the main Confederate force, Federal cavalry clashed with that of General J. E. B. Stuart in a series of short but intense battles. Although, Stuart was eventually forced to withdraw, his cavalry succeeded in preventing the Federals from pinpointing Robert E. Lee's army.
Points of Interest:
Upperville was but one skirmish in the campaign leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg.
As Lee's Confederates continued to advance north, Philadelphians began shutting down their stores and businesses the day following the Battle of Upperville.
