In an attempt to locate the whereabouts of the main Confederate force, Federal cavalry clashed with that of General J. E. B. Stuart in a series of short but intense battles. Points of Interest:

  • Upperville was but one skirmish in the campaign leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg.

  • As Lee's Confederates continued to advance north, Philadelphians began shutting down their stores and businesses the day following the Battle of Upperville.
