Conflict: American Civil War

Combatants: Confederates vs. Federals

Location: Virginia (USA)

Outcome: Confederate victory

As the Confederate army moved to invade the North, Federal General Robert Milroy was caught in Winchester by full enemy corps under General Richard Ewell (shown below). After two days of fighting, Milroy attempted to withdraw but was cut off and suffered nearly 4500 casualties with 3,358 captured. The Confederates lost less than 300 troops.

Points of Interest:

  • Milroy's nickname was "Gray Eagle".

  • Ewell's troops would press on through the Shenandoah to fight at Gettysburg in July.
