Conflict: American Civil War
Combatants: Confederates vs. Federals
Location: Virginia (USA)
Outcome: Confederate victory
In June of 1864, Union General Ulysses S. Grant dispatched General Phillip Sheridan to raid westward while the Army of the Potomac moved toward Petersburg. In a two-day battle, Sheridan clashed with pursuing Confederate cavalry under the command of cavalry General Wade Hampton. Sheridan was ultimately forced to withdraw and rejoin the main army, suffering some 700 casualties. The Confederates lost around 600 soldiers in the battle.
Points of Interest:
Hampton was the successor of J.E.B. Stuart who had been killed at Yellow Tavern in May.
At Trevilian Station, two Confederate cavalry divisions were engaged by General George Armstrong Custer's own brigade.
